Jason Day has bogeyed eight of the 14 holes he’s played so far today, and he shot each of the other six at par. It’s been a rough round for most players who teed off this morning. Only two — Scott Piercy and Ian Poulter — are under par.
U.S. Open Round 1 Top Story Lines
• The story of Day 1 may be the fescue. The U.S.G.A. brought in nearly 200,000 square feet of the tall grass to surround the fairways that were widened after 2004. And players are finding that it is best to steer clear.
• The “Super Group” of Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy is not living up to its billing. The trio combined for nine bogeys, three double-bogeys and only one birdie through eight holes.
