Anthony McFarland of Maryland ran over Ohio State for 231 yards — in the first half

Let’s review Anthony McFarland’s first half against No. 10 Ohio State:

  • On Maryland’s second play of the day, the redshirt freshman introduced himself with an 81-yard touchdown run.
  • After Ohio State responded with a 10-play drive that ended in a field goal, McFarland scored again, this time on the first snap of Maryland’s drive, with a 75-yard run.
  • His 153 rushing yards in the first quarter marked the most rushing yards in the first quarter by a player in an FBS game this season.
  • In the second quarter, McFarland surpassed his career-high game total for rushing yards.
  • He ended the half with 231 rushing yards on 11 carries, averaging 21 yards per attempt. That’s the most rushing yards a Maryland player has ever recorded in the first half of game. It ranked eighth all-time on the program list for a full game, 75 yards from matching LaMont Jordan’s record set against Virginia in 1999.

Maryland took a 24-17 lead into halftime behind 281 total rushing yards, while quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome has completed just one pass on four attempts.

Bill Connelly of SB Nation uses advanced analytics to develop statistical profiles for college football teams, and Maryland ranks in the top 10 in both of his metrics for explosiveness. The Terps have excelled in that area this season, accumulating 33 plays of at least 25 yards through the first 10 games of the season. Meanwhile, Ohio State is one of the country’s worst defenses when it comes to preventing these plays, ranking 115th and 101st in Connelly’s two metrics.

McFarland tacked on a 52-yard run later in the first half, but that play was followed by three sacks. Maryland then missed 49-yard field goal attempt, and the Buckeyes responded with a touchdown.

When interim coach Matt Canada opted to go for it on fourth down later in the second quarter, McFarland picked up 10 yards to keep alive a drive that ended in a touchdown from fellow running back Javon Leake.

With a 5-5 record entering Saturday’s matchup, Maryland is playing for a chance to become bowl-eligible after nearly beating Indiana last week but coming up short on the final drive of the game.
